What is a Marine Survey?
The purpose of a marine survey is to identify any deficiencies or potential issues that could affect the vessel's performance or safety on the water. The surveyor will provide a detailed report of their findings, which can be used by the vessel owner to address any necessary repairs or upgrades.
Marine surveys are commonly conducted when a vessel is being purchased, sold, or insured. They can also be required by lending institutions or regulatory agencies. A survey can provide peace of mind to the vessel owner and help ensure the safety of all onboard.A Marine Survey is a comprehensive inspection of your vessel with the purpose to determine condition, value, and seaworthiness. The Marine Survey may be requested by your insurance provider or financial underwriters to help determine the vessel’s condition and valuation.
Why do I need a Marine Survey?
A Marine Surveyor determines if your boat meets safety criteria set forth by The American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), Federal Code of Regulations (FCR), and National Fire Protection Association (NPA). The findings uncovered by a Marine Surveyor will determine the true value of the subject vessel and is often used as a negotiation tool.

Our Standards
We use standards set by The American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) and The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) when evaluating the subject vessel. The Pre Purchase survey examines: Structural Integrity, Electrical Systems, Propulsion, Steering, Engine Performance, Fuel System, Navigation Equipment, Electronics, Sanitation, Safety Equipment and Cosmetics.
Pre Purchase Survey Process
It is recommended the vessel be hauled out (typically arranged and paid for by the buyer) for a bottom inspection of the hull, shafts, propellers, rudder, anodes, thru hulls and to identify blisters, delamination or moisture intrusion. After completing the bottom inspection a sea trial is often performed to record observations of the engine performance. We will also review vessel documentation, hull numbers, and service records when available. A current market value and replacement value of the vessel will be detailed in the survey report with market comparables listed for support. When possible, the Pre Purchase Marine Survey includes photos in the body of the report to highlight and support major findings. The Surveyor’s findings will fall into one of three categories. “A Findings” are safety related and typically cite a code or standard set by ABYC, NFPA or CFR. “A Findings” should be remedied before the boat is next underway. “B Findings” while important do not indicate and immediate safety concern, they typically note items that need to be monitored or eventually need repair. “C Findings” are observations of the surveyor, they relate to cosmetic defects of the vessel.
